Preventing Rejections

If you had Marketplace insurance and filed your taxes without including the 1095-A information, the IRS will likely reject your return or delay your refund significantly.

If you haven't received your form by mid-February, you can typically find a digital copy in your Marketplace account under the "Messages" or "Tax Forms" section.

Important Filing Update: IRS Direct File Discontinued

Action Required: Former users can no longer log in to the Direct File site to retrieve past records. To access your tax transcripts or previous returns, you must now use your IRS Online Account or submit Form 4506.

New Senior Deduction

If you are 65 or older, you may qualify for an additional $6,000 deduction (or $12,000 for couples), which stacks on top of your standard deduction.

The IRS will provide approximately $1 billion in penalty relief. Most of those receiving the penalty relief make under $400,000 a year.

What to Do If You Receive an Incorrect 1099-K Form?

If you receive a 1099-K for personal payments or the amount is wrong, the IRS recommends these steps:

  • Contact the Filer: Reach out to the payment app or bank listed on the form to request a corrected version showing $0.

  • Report the Error: If you cannot get a correction, report the full gross amount on Schedule 1 (Line 8z) as "Other Income" and then create a matching negative entry on Line 24z as "Other Adjustments" to zero out the tax effect.

  • Keep Records: Save your correspondence with the payment app and any documentation (like text messages or receipts) that proves the payment was personal.
